EIC Accelerator 2026 — How to Apply for EU Deep-Tech Funding
EIC Accelerator offers deep-tech scaleups up to €2.5M in grants plus up to €15M in equity. Here is how to apply in 2026.
EIC Accelerator 2026 — How to Apply for EU Deep-Tech Funding
The EIC Accelerator is the European Innovation Council''s flagship programme for deep-tech companies scaling in Europe and globally. It offers a unique blended finance package: grant plus equity, up to €17.5M per company.
This guide covers eligibility, funding amounts, 2026 deadlines, and how the application process actually works.
What is the EIC Accelerator?
EIC Accelerator is part of Horizon Europe, run by the European Innovation Council. It funds breakthrough innovations — typically deep-tech, life sciences, cleantech, and strategic technologies like AI, quantum, and advanced manufacturing.
What makes it unique: EIC can back you with grant (for TRL 5–8 development) and direct investment via the EIC Fund (for scaling), in a single decision.
Who can apply?
- Individual SMEs established in the EU or an associated country — including Sweden.
- Small mid-caps (up to 499 employees) can apply for the investment-only track.
- The company must have an innovation ready to scale, with a clear market and competitive edge.
- No consortia — this is for a single company.
Funding amounts
| Component | Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Grant | Up to €2.5M | Development & validation (TRL 5–8) |
| Equity via EIC Fund | Up to €15M | Scaling & market rollout |
| Total (blended finance) | Up to €17.5M | Combination of the above |
Grants cover up to 70% of eligible costs. Equity is a direct investment — EIC becomes a minority shareholder.
Deadlines & cut-offs 2026
Two application formats:
- Short application — always open (submit any time).
- Full proposal — for those who pass the short application. Has fixed cut-offs, typically 2–3 per year. In 2026, cut-offs are expected around March and October — confirm exact dates on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal.
Tip: submit the short application well before the cut-off — you''ll have time to iterate on feedback before locking the full proposal.
The 3-step application process
Step 1 — Short application
- ~5 pages + short video (3 min) + pitch deck (10 slides).
- Reviewed by 4 external experts within ~4–6 weeks.
- Needs a GO from at least 3 of 4 to advance.
Step 2 — Full proposal
- Detailed business plan, technology, financing strategy (~50 pages).
- Reviewed by 3 experts.
- Needs a GO from all 3 to be invited to interview.
Step 3 — Jury interview
- 35-minute pitch + Q&A with a jury of investors and entrepreneurs in Brussels (or online).
- Final decision within a few weeks.
Total lead time from short application to decision: 6–9 months.
Evaluation criteria
EIC scores three criteria with equal weight:
- Excellence — how novel and technically strong is the innovation?
- Impact — market potential, scalability, and strategic importance for Europe.
- Implementation — team, plan, and execution capacity.
Common mistakes & success factors
Avoid:
- Overly tech-focused pitch without a clear market story.
- Weak competitive analysis — the jury wants to see you know the alternatives.
- Underestimating capital needs — be realistic about scaling costs.
- Weak commercial side — deep-tech teams need business firepower too.
Winning patterns:
- Clear strategic relevance for Europe (Green Deal, digital sovereignty, health).
- Proven market traction — pilots, LOIs, early revenue.
- Realistic scaling plan with capital needs mapped to milestones.
Alternatives & complements
EIC Accelerator is highly competitive (~5% success rate). Combine with:
- EU grants for companies — for earlier-stage funding.
- Klimatklivet — Swedish investment aid for climate projects.
- AI grants for companies — if AI is core to the innovation.
- EIC Pathfinder — earlier TRL (2–4), for research-driven innovation.
- EIC Transition — bridge from Pathfinder results to Accelerator.
